New Signing Imminent?

The Sponichi website is reporting that 1m 90cm striker Rafael Mariano has joined the squad camp at Gotemba with a view to joining Ardija, following the departure of Klemen Lavric. According to Wikipedia, Rafael is Brazilian born but took Turkish nationality and has most recently been playing in Turkey with Vestel Manisaspor. The 26-year-old will play in a friendly game against Keio University on Saturday after the end of the camp.

Thoughts on Rafael from someone who follows the Turkish League closely:

"He had one good season three years ago, was able to apply for Turkish citizenship after being resident here for a number of years in the hope he could play for the national team, i.e. he had the potential and was being talked up by the pundits. Then he seemed to suffer when Manisa went down and was pretty anonymous last year when they were in the second division. He never got an international call-up either.

"I saw he had left Manisaspor and was wondering where he would end up, a decent enough player for the second division of Europe but not much more, don't expect too much."
